Published on 2015-05-06 If you're experiencing engine issues in your 2005-2010 3 valve Mustang, then you may need to consider replacing your cam phasers. Common symptoms of a defective cam phaser is a rough idle, hesitation, ticking, or a light knocking noise when the engine is at operating temperature.
For example, this Mustang was actually throwing a check engine light for a faulty cam phaser. There was no noise, but you could hear a light tick and feel a slight vibration at idle or cruising speeds. Damage to the cam phasers can result from ruthless driving habits, such as beating the crap out of the car every time you’re behind the wheel. Or, in this situation, a previous owner who really didn't keep track of the maintenance and went several thousand miles over a scheduled oil change.
I drive a 2008 Mustang GT with the 4.6 liter engine. My car has 125,000 miles.
My OEM passenger side cam phaser had a really bad knock, so bad that you could physically feel that side of the engine thumping near the phaser location if you touched the valve cover. I heard that the cars are drivable even with the noises but I didn't want to take any chances. The OEM Ford phasers are expensive, and I've read that aftermarket ones tend to fail, but LMR has not ever let me down and the price was hard to beat. I've read *extremely* bad reviews on Dorman brand cam phasers and unfortunately that's the brand that LMR carries here. I didn't know this until after I purchased the phaser.
Upon installation, I noticed after my very first drive that when I came home, the bad knocking was already back. I didn't feel like replacing this thing again so I just left it in there. Recently, a few months later, I noticed that my RPM would stay at 2 grand or higher and slowly come down. I thought my throttle body was stuck open and checked the voltages. I thought my alternator was bad and swapped it for two new ones. I also had my vct solenoids replaced and still nothing. It wasn't until recently that I found out the Dorman phaser I install has failed completely and is stuck in open position at start up and idle, so my timing is off. My car bucks at low RPM now and has no power at high RPM on the highway.
Bottom line, STAY AWAY FROM THIS THING. I had to fork out the cash for the Ford version, but that's the only version of the phasers you want to get, whether you have a 4.6 or 5.4 engine.

Not hard to install. Took care of the nasty knock I was getting at full temp idle.
I have been restoring my car for a long time. The engine is a 331 stroker afr 185 heads, trick flow r series intake, 1 3/4 in long tubes with flow master dumps. Sounds awesome and love it every ride. ...
