Midway through the production run for the 2001 model year Ford changed the design of the water pump on the 4.6L engine. The older style pump produced from 1996 to mid 2001 had a longer shaft. In January of 2001 the design of the pump was changed to a shorter shaft. This necessitated a change in the design of the pump pulley.
Just installed the pulley set - happy as a lark that my brother owns an auto shop. Removing the alternator pulley nut and the crankshaft pulley bolt was a breeze using an impact wrench. HINT: remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and washer, then re-install the bolt; use the pulley to push against the bolt head. Doing so will save doing any damage to the crankshaft end. On the 3-bolt puller, use 8 mm x 1.25 bolts. You might need to chase the threads of the holes in the stock dampener with a tap; shoot a little WD-40 into the holes, then work the tap in slowly, turning it in, then backing out, turn a little deeper, then back it out....... You do not want to break off a tap in this location. My coolant and ALT gauge report that everything is kosher. The snake is smooth.

These installed no problem, although the stock balancer/pulley was a bit of a bear to get off without damaging anything. Make sure you use a tapered end to the puller to avoid crank snout damage.
Engine spins up a whole lot faster and the voltage and coolant flow seem to be adequate as expected. Expensive, but worth the quality and result, all day.
