For 1984, the GL and the GLX were abandoned, leaving the L, LX, GT, Turbo GT, and the brand new SVO. The SVO was a modern alternative to the small block V-8, with an intercooled 2.3L turbocharged four cylinder, producing 175 horsepower. The suspension was also modified to give more balanced handling performance. It was treated to Koni gas shocks, 1.12" anti-sway bars, and four wheel disc brakes. The SVO also had a unique interior, featuring Recaro bucket seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, 140mph speedometer, and boost, water temp, and oil-pressure gauges. A bi-plane rear spoiler was a notable exterior feature. Road & Track called the car "the best all-around car for the enthusiast driver ever produced by the U.S. industry".
