From 1987 to 1990, the LX model remained pretty much unchanged, and the GT was mechanically the same through 1993. Mustang sales continued to climb, with the high performance 5.0L vastly outselling the 2.3L engine. The changes that were made were mostly small or visual changes, such as the introduction of an in-demand yellow paint color. Ford produced a few hundred "Tropical Yellow" mustangs to appease the masses. Both the LX and the GT received a higher amperage alternator and larger capacity battery. The 1988 Mustang LX came standard with the 90 hp 2.3 L four cylinder with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. The 5.0 L V-8 engine, producing 225 hp, was optional. Both models were built with coil spring MacPherson struts in the front, and a four link coil spring suspension in the rear.
