Your Mustang's automatic transmission's main focus is smooth shifting between gears. To accomplish this it often goes into two gears at once while shifting up, which is known as a shift overlap.
To reduce or eliminate the shift overlap you will need to install a valve body kit in your Mustang. Shift improvement kits not only improve performance but they also reduce wear because the transmission won't be trying to drive in two gears at once.

How’s it going everybody? Landan here with LMR.com! Today this quick video is going to cover Performance Automatic’s shift kits fitting the 1996 to 2004 automatic Mustang equipped with the 4R70W transmission.
Since the doors opened in 1984, Performance Automatic has been delivering the ultimate in high performance transmissions, torque converters, and the related drivetrain components. Their countless hours spent on research and development allows for the production of some of the best drivetrain components on the Mustang market.
If you’re in the market for more positive, tire chirping shifts from your 4R70W transmission then a shift kit from Performance Automatic is a must have. This particular shift kit not only improves shifting performance, but also reduces wear on internal components by reducing shift overlap. From the factory shift overlap is very noticeable and basically means the transmission is in two gears as once. This is an effort to increase shift smoothness, and accommodate to the run of the mill daily driver.
Key differences over the years with the 4R70W was the moderate changes in valve body design in 2001. 1996 to 2000 Mustangs equipped with the 4R70W features a 2-3 Accumulator Plate and 2-3 Capacity Modulator Valve. Whereas, the 2001 to 2004 4R70Ws had both the accumulator plate and capacity modulator valve omitted. Be mindful of that little bit of knowledge when picking one up for your car.
As far as installation goes guys, I recommend this one only if you have above average mechanical ability. This one for the most part is pretty in depth. Good news thought, this one can be done off of jack stands since you remove the valve body from transmission to make the modifications. On flip side, don’t be shy to run the car down to your local transmission shop and have a professional do the work.
Our very own project Green Bean features this Performance Automatic shift kit which should really help chip away at our sixty foot times.
