The 2000 "New Edge" Ford Mustang was designed with better handling in mind, and more power. The rear was widened by 1.4" and the shocks were retuned to improve ride quality in the face of stiffer springs. The steering was revised as well, with a better feel and a turning radius that was smaller by 3 feet. Engine-wise, the 2000 Mustang was pumped up compared to pre-1999 years. The 3.8 L V-6 received new cylinder heads, a higher flowing intake manifold, and some material changes. Horsepower increased to 190, and torque went up to 215. The GT's 4.6 L V-8 had a bunch of changes in store as well, and now produced 250 horsepower and 302 ft-lb torque. A new feature for 1999 was the option of traction control.
The 2000 Cobra R had a modular iron block and produced impressive numbers from the factory. It was rated at 385 hp and 285 ft-lb of torque. It has a Tremec T-56 6 speed transmission, the same as used in the Corvette, Camaro, and Viper. It also had a very aggressive look thanks to a front splitter and high rear wing. The Cobra R also had side exit exhaust tips with Borla mufflers, and smoked headlights.
