In the second half of the 2004 model year, Ford replaced the 3.8 L V-6 with their 3.9 L OHV Essex V-6. The engine had a slightly longer stroke, but produced the same numbers as the engine it replaced. The GT still used the 4.6 L V-8 it had been using, but gained an additional 10 horsepower, for a total of 260. The change was due to new heads, cams, and intake manifold. These modifications could be retrofitted to previous model year 4.6L engines. Quarter mile times were in the low 14-second range.
