If you own a 1994 to 2004 Mustang and are shopping around for weight reduction and a boost in performance, then a Flaming River manual steering rack is the way go. Each Flaming River rack is manufactured from a new, aluminum core and features a 20:1 steering ratio. New boots, and inner tie rods come standard with the Flaming River rack. Now, if you’re one to get everything in one shot, then Flaming River’s manual rack kit is your best bet.
Their kit features the same manual rack with boots and inner tie rods, but will also include non-offset poly-urethane bushings, outer tie-rods and the needed collapsible steering shaft. The Flaming River manual racks are great for racing applications and light-duty street use.
There is some key fitment notes I want to make clear for you guys when converting to a manual rack. On 1996 to 2004 V8 Mustangs, a manual brake conversion is highly recommended when converting to a manual rack. Since the power-assist brakes utilize the same system as the power rack, you’ll be left with open lines that lead to nothing. On the flip side, 1996 to 2004 V6 Mustangs and all 1994-1995 Mustangs can keep the power-assist brakes since they are accompanied with a brake booster.
Further notes guys, this one is definitely for the experienced enthusiast with more than average mechanical abilities. Of course, if you are not comfortable with doing it yourself, don’t be shy to have your local performance shop install it for you.
