How To: Install Mustang SVE Interior Door Panel Insert Kit

Replace your sagging door panel inserts with this SVE door panel insert kit for your 2005-2009 Mustang!

SVE Interior Door Panel Insert Kit

If you own a 05-09 Mustang, more than likely your car has fallen victim to the ever-so-annoying interior door panel insert problem. Basically, the interior door panel insert material will start to come apart and sag down leaving your Mustang’s interior not looking up to par.

Thankfully, the folks over at SVE found a permanent solution to rid those awful, sagging interior door panel inserts for you 2005-2009 Mustang owners. This S197 door panel insert kit includes both driver and passenger side door panel inserts and the appropriate two-part epoxy. The inserts are constructed of durable ABS plastic material in a satin black, cross-weaved pattern, and will feature a textured finish.

It has a unique sheen that is sure to set your Mustang's interior off. You can install these into your car straight out of the box, or paint them to match whatever factory interior color your Mustang came with.


Required Tools

  • Drill
  • Soft Wire Wheel Brush
  • Socket Wrench
  • Socket Set
  • Denatured Alcohol
  • Masking Tape
  • Weights
  • Coarse Sand paper
  • Needle Nose Pliers


Install

  1. Start by taking a 7mm nut driver and removing the eight screws around the perimeter of the door panel.
  2. Remove the mirror hole cover by gently pulling it away from the door.
  3. Disconnect the electrical connector on the mirror switch.
  4. Take a small screwdriver and remove the inner trim cover behind the door panel, then remove the T-30 Torx Bit screw located behind the cover.
  5. Remove the trim panel behind the door armrest with a flat-blade screwdriver.
  6. You can then remove the T-30 Torx Bit screw behind the cover.
  7. You can now remove the door lock and window switch assembly by gently pulling it away from the door panel.
  8. You will need to disconnect the wiring harness from the switch assembly before you can put it aside.
  9. With the assembly out of the way, you can now remove the 7mm nut located behind it.
  10. With this nut removed, you can now remove the door panel by simply lifting up on it and gently pulling it away from the door.
  11. Disconnect the door lock and speaker wiring harnesses from the back of the door panel.
  12. Remove the door handle cable with a pair of pliers.
  13. Compress the back of the cable while pulling on the cable to remove it.
  14. With your door panel out of the car, start by pulling away the factory insert.
  15. If the material comes off without the backing like ours did, simply use a flat-head screwdriver and lift up at one of the corners.
  16. Then peel away any remaining material backing the best you can.
  17. Some material will stay attached, so don't worry.
  18. Liberally spray some adhesive remover on some of the bigger pieces that remain and give it time to dwell.
  19. Pull away the remaining pieces.
  20. We found a pair of needle-nosed pliers did the trick for some of the smaller, tighter areas.
  21. Now tape off the area around where the door panel insert sits and grab you a soft wire wheel and drill.
  22. On low speed, carefully knock down the rest of the material that is attached to the door panel.
  23. Once you've removed all the material, vacuum up any large pieces.
  24. Using some coarse sandpaper, scuff the entire door panel and then remove your masking tape.
  25. Test fit the SVE Door Panel Insert.
  26. Sand down any areas that did not sit flush with the door panel.
  27. Blow away any debris and wipe the area down thoroughly with denatured alcohol.
  28. Wipe the back of your new SVE insert with denatured alcohol as well.
  29. Grab the included 3M adhesive kit and liberally apply the adhesive to the door panel.
  30. Move fairly quickly and then place the SVE insert onto the door panel.
  31. Align the insert and firmly apply pressure for at least 30 seconds.
  32. Per the instructions on the adhesive tube, lift up on the insert and then reapply pressure.
  33. Repeat steps 29-32 on the lower part of the insert as well.
  34. Hold the insert in place with quality masking tape.
  35. It may also help if you place a soft weighted object onto the insert to help it adhere properly.
  36. Let the glue cure for at least one hour before reassembly.
  37. Do the same for the other door panel and then reinstall your panels back into the car.

What's going on, everyone? Landan here with latemodelrestoration.com. Today I'm going to be checking out and installing SVEs S197 interior door panel insert kits fitting all 2005 to 2009 Mustangs.

Follow along, guys, as we walk you through the install on this S197 door panel insert kit into this 2006 Mustang GT. Before we begin, you can click the link below or in the video description to watch our door panel removal video.

With your door panel out of the car, start by pulling away the factory insert. If the material comes off without the backing like ours did, simply use a flat-head screwdriver and lift up at one of the corners. Then peel away any remaining material backing the best you can. Some material will stay attached, so don't worry.

Liberally spray some adhesive remover on some of the bigger pieces that remain and give it time to dwell. Then, pull away the remaining pieces. We fond a pair of needle-nosed pliers did the trick for some of the smaller, tighter areas.

Now tape off the area around where the door panel insert sits and grab you a soft wire wheel and drill. On low speed, carefully knock down the rest of the material that is attached to the door panel. Once you've removed all the material, vacuum up any large pieces.

Using some coarse sandpaper, scuff the entire door panel and then remove your masking tape. Blow away any debris and wipe the area down thoroughly with denatured alcohol. Wipe the back of your new SVE insert with denatured alcohol as well.

Next, grab the included 3M adhesive kit and liberally apply the adhesive to the back of the SVE door panel insert. Move fairly quickly and then spray the accelerator solutions to the back of the door panel. Align the insert and firmly apply pressure for at least 30 seconds. Do the same for the other door panel and then reinstall your panels back into the car. Double-check everything and you're all done.

Well guys, no more ugly, sagging interior door panel material. The SVE S197 interior door panel insert kit did the trick to bring some new life back into this interior. When installing these inserts, be sure and bring some patience along with a few specialty tools.
