With the redesigned S197 Mustang body style in 2005, the new, retro look revived the Mustang from the tried and true New Edge era. Coming off the heels of a 2 year run of the infamous 03-04 Cobra and 8 years of the old reliable 2V, Ford knew they had to come with it to keep Mustang owner's excited. Enter, the glorious 3V.

The 3-valve 4.6 engine was an updated, more powerful 4.6L engine that immediately put bolt-on 2Vs to shame at the drag strip. With a few mods, these cars saw close to 300 horsepower at the wheels, inching them closer to their rated horsepower from the factory. With popular mods such as hot-rod cams and Ford Racing intake manifolds, these cars pushed well over the 300 mark, as seen in Andrew's dyno run.

Car Specs:

  • 3-valve Engine w/ 171k Miles
  • Ford Performance Hot Rod Camshafts
  • Pacesetter Long Tube Headers
  • Pacesetter Off-road H-Pipe
  • SVE Axle Back
  • Tremec 3650 5-speed Manual Transmission (4th gear pull which is 1:1)
  • Aluminum Driveshaft
  • 3.31 Rear Gear
  • 19" Wheels w/ 305/35/19 Tires
  • Brenspeed Custom Tune
  • 93 Octane Fuel

Dyno Results:
    • 318 Horsepower
    • 316 lb-ft Torque

Let's face it, the 2005-2010 Mustangs packed some sort of punch whenever they were new. The 4.6L 3-valve engine isn't the most popular of engines in Ford modular engine family, but that's only because we have a 5.0L Coyote by today's standards.

Andrew found this 2009 Mustang GT with the California Special package at a local Copart auction. For those of us that watch videos on YouTube, we know buying and fixing vehicles from Copart makes for good content. Well, Andrew wanted to take a gander at it, and this is the result. He did all of the work by himself, in his own garage with some basic tools to get the job done. Well done, Andrew! See the relative dyno information below.
