The below Technical Service Bulletins, TSB for short, were issued for the 2012 Mustang and contain symptom, diagnosis, and repair information for common issues. Click the TSB ID numbers below to see the full TSB, there is also a brief description of the TSB below the number.
Issue
Some 2011-2012 Mustang vehicles equipped with 5.0L engine may have unauthorized modifications to the powertrain hardware and/or calibration which may result in exceeding component design limits. Such modifications could cause damage to the powertrain and/or void the powertrain and/or void the factory powertrain warranty.
Issue
Some 2011-2012 Mustang vehicles (excluding Boss 302) built on or before 3/31/2011 and equipped with a 5.0L engine may exhibit an intermittent metallic rattle or scratching type noise in the area at the front of the left hand (driver side) cylinder head at idle with the engine at operating temperature.
Issue
Some 2011-2012 Mustang vehicles built on or before 9/1/2011 and equipped with 3.7L engines may exhibit illuminated malfunction indicator Lamp (MIL) with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0460 stored in powertrain control module (PCM) memory This fuel level indication (FLI) DTC may be a false code generated by customer fueling habits.
Issue
Some 2012 Mustang Boss 302 and GT500 vehicles equipped with Recaro front seats and built on or before 5/9/2011 may exhibit a concern with the driver and/or passenger side seat trim bezel warping or coming loose.
Issue
Some 2011-2012 Mustang vehicles equipped with a MT82 6-speed manual transmission built on or before 08/15/2011 may exhibit increased shift efforts in cold ambient temperatures. This is usually most noticeable in 1st and 2nd gears but may also be noticed in 3rd through 6th gears. The increased shift effort may be the result of the increased viscosity of the transmission fluid in cold weather.
Issue
Some 2012 Mustangs built 7/19/2011 through 12/1/2011 may exhibit a squeak/squeal from the rear brakes during brake application and/or when making turns. The squeak/squeal sounds like a metal-on-metal noise (similar to a brake wear indicator noise). This concern may be due to a rear brake anti-rattle spring clip contacting the brake rotor when applying the brakes due to a broken locating tab on the anti-rattle spring clip. This may allow the anti-rattle spring clip to lightly contact the rotor causing the noise.
Issue
Some 2011-2012 Mustang vehicles, equipped with a 3.7L engine and built on or before 5/1/2011 may exhibit a cold startup ticking noise coming from the engine. The noise is present under the left hand (LH) valve cover and may last up to ten minutes.
Issue
Some 2011-2012 Mustang vehicles (excluding Boss) equipped with a 5.0L engine may
exhibit an intermittent metallic rattle or scratching type noise in the area at the front of the left hand or driver side cylinder head at idle with the engine
at operating temperature.
Issue
Some 2011-2012 Mustang vehicles equipped with a manual transmission may exhibit a squeak or creak noise from the clutch pedal during actuation.
Issue
2012-2013 Mustang vehicles equipped with 3.7L engine built on or between 1/6/2012 - 5/25/2012 may exhibit a chirping or squealing noise from the accessory drive belt during idle and acceleration.
Issue
Some 2011-2012 Mustangs equipped with a 5.0L Coyote Engine and Air Conditioning (A/C) Compressor stretch belt configuration may exhibit a light lower-end engine knock most noticeable when engine temperature is warm and the vehicle is at idle.
Issue
Some 2011-2013 Mustang vehicles with the rear axle vent on the left (driver) side may exhibit a fluid leak from the rear axle vent.
Issue
Some 2011-2012 Mustang vehicles equipped with SYNC and built on or before 7/1/2012 may exhibit intermittent voice recognition: SYNC is not listening/hearing commands, no response to voice commands or SYNC responds voice commands not available with this device when using play artist/album/track commands. Voice recognition, phone/USB connectivity, and traffic, directions and information notification/voice recognition, commands not available with this device when using play artist/album/track commands.
Issue
Some 2011-2013 Mustangs may exhibit a grunt/creak/chirp/squeak noise from the front lower control arm hydro bushing. These noises may occur over large vertical bumps like speed bumps, pot holes, rough roads, and driveway approaches.
Issue
Some 2011-2013 Mustangs vehicles may exhibit an intermittent drivability condition, crank/no start, a blown fuse 13 in the battery junction box and may have Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0627 stored in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
Issue
Some 2012 Mustang vehicles equipped with the 6R80 automatic transmission and built on or after 4/15/2011 through 6/8/2011 may exhibit a transmission fluid leak from the bell housing area.
Issue
Some 2011-2013 Mustangs equipped with a 6R80 transmission and built on or before 4/8/2013 may exhibit a transmission engagement in higher (5th) gear when starting. The wrench indicator and/or the seat belt minder may be illuminated, the speedometer reads zero and the odometer displays dashes while driving. Symptoms may clear after an ignition key cycle. Diagnostics trouble codes (DTCs) P0720 and P0722 may or may not be stored in the powertrain control module (PCM).
Issue
Some 2011-2013 Mustangs may exhibit a delayed forward or reverse transmission engagement condition when cold.
Issue
Some 2012-2013 Mustang vehicles built on or before 08/31/2012 may exhibit a sun visor vanity mirror door that will not close or is loose. This may cause the mirror light to stay on.
Issue
Some 2011-2014 Mustang vehicles equipped with a 6R80 transmission and built on or before 4/8/2013 may exhibit a transmission engagement in 5th gear when starting. The wrench indicator and/or the seat belt minder may be illuminated, the speedometer reads zero and the odometer displays dashes while driving. Symptoms may clear after an ignition key cycle. Ford Motor Company Recall #12C23
NHTSA Recall Campaign #12V190000
Components Invonlved - Exterior Lighting and Powertrain
Issue
- Summary:
- Ford is recalling certail model year 2012-2013 Mustang vehicles for failing to comply with one of the neck injury requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard nos. 102, "transmission shift lever sequence, starter interlock, and transmission braking effect" and 108 “lamps, reflective devices and associated equipment.” These vehicles may have a transmission range sensor (trs) that was calibrated out of specification for reverse gear.
- Consequence:
- If this condition exists, the transmission may not go into reverse or when the driver pushes the shift lever in the reverse “R” position and the vehicle’s transmission does go in reverse or the backup lamp on the rear of the Mustang vehicle may not illuminate. These conditions increase the risk of a crash or a pedestrian being struck due to the vehicle’s not signaling it is in reverse.
- Remedy:
- Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the trs as necessary, free of charge. The safety recall began on june 11, 2012. Owners may contact ford motor company customer relationship center at 1-866-436-7332.
- Notes:
- Ford's recall campaign number is 12c23. Customers may contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty: 1-800-424-9153); or go to www.safercar.gov.
