Fox Body Mustang 5.0 Resto Power Steering Bracket Install (86-93)

The components of your Fox Body’s engine bay have most likely seen better days as they approach 20+ years on the road. While it might be easy to look over the smaller details when restoring your Fox, certain parts are designed specifically to keep your engine running safely. That is exactly the case in this 5.0 Resto power steering hose bracket for the 1986-1993 Mustangs.

This bracket secures the high-pressure hose in the right orientation to keep it out of the way of the accessory drive. When these brackets break or fail, it can leave your power steering hose dangling in the path of rotating and hot components. This can lead to a hole or tear in the hose, leaking power steering fluid all over your engine bay and causing a loss of power steering functionality. This bracket is cheap insurance to keep your power steering system working as intended.

Step-by-Step Guide:

This installation can be done with the car either in the air or with the car on the ground.

If you are working with the car in the air, you can access the bracket without removing any additional components. If you are working with the car on the ground, you will need to remove the battery and battery tray in order to access the bracket.

To remove the battery and battery tray, simply remove the battery hold down, pull the battery out of the engine bay, and then remove the two bolts securing the battery tray to the engine bay.

1.  Locate the power steering hold-down bracket. On the particular car mentioned in this guide (1986 Capri), the bracket is situated near the battery cables. If the bracket is attached to the frame rail, leave the 10mm bolt in place for leverage.

2. Loosen the 10mm bolt on the bracket and open it up, creating enough space to fit it around the power steering hose.

3. Once the bracket is open, loosen the bolt on the hose clamp and open it up further to remove the old bracket from the hose.

4. Remove the old bracket, which should now be free from the power steering hose.

5. Take the new bracket and install it in reverse order, ensuring the locating tab aligns with the frame rail.

6.  Loop the new bracket around the power steering hose before getting it against the frame rail.

7.  Install the fully threaded 10mm fastener and tighten it by hand until snug. Do not over-tighten.

8. Close the bracket and secure it by squeezing the strap together and install the fastener.

9. Perform a visual inspection to ensure the hose is correctly positioned and not pinched. Check clearance for transmission cooler lines, especially if your car has an AOD transmission.

10. Reinstall the battery tray and reconnect all components. Reinstall the battery and secure it properly.

11. Conduct a final inspection of the area to ensure everything is in place and functioning correctly.

12.  Reassemble any other parts that were removed during the installation process.
