What Is A 5.0L Crankshaft Sensor Ring?

The crankshaft sensor ring, often known as a pulse ring or exciter ring, plays a crucial role in your vehicle's engine. The crankshaft sensor ring is monitored by the crankshaft position sensor, which is mounted adjacent to the ring on the engine block. The crankshaft position sensor is the primary means by which ignition information is transmitted to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). It achieves this by closely observing the pulse ring, which relays critical data about the crankshaft's position and speed to the PCM.
 
But the role of the crankshaft sensor goes beyond this. It can identify piston travel, synchronize the ignition system, and help the PCM track the angular position of the crankshaft relative to a fixed reference point. Also, the PCM uses the crankshaft sensor signal to detect misfires by measuring rapid decelerations between the teeth on the ring.
 
Now that you understand the significance of the crankshaft sensor ring, you might be curious about potential upgrades. If you're pushing your coyote engine beyond 7,700 RPM, there's a popular option: the high RPM pulse ring. This upgrade increases the acceptable RPM limit to 8,100 RPM and is designed to prevent signal degradation by using a taller wall in the area with the missing tooth.

How To Install A 5.0L Crankshaft Sensor Ring

In order to access the crankshaft sensor ring, you will need to remove a few core components of your drivetrain. Follow along with the following How-Tos to remove the necessary components:

1. Transmission and Component Removal:
Start by removing the transmission and all its related components from the vehicle. This is essential to gain access to the crankshaft sensor ring.

 
2. Remove the Old Crankshaft Sensor Ring:
Carefully take out the old crankshaft sensor ring. Make a note of its orientation, as this is crucial for the installation of the new ring.

 
3. Install the New Ring:
Install the new crankshaft sensor ring with the teeth facing towards the engine. Pay attention to a small locating dial on the ring, which must be correctly positioned within a specific hole on the rear flange of the crankshaft. This configuration is designed to ensure precise alignment, so take your time to make sure it's correctly seated.

 
4. Reassemble the Components:
Once the new ring is in place, you can proceed with reassembling the other components you previously removed. Follow the guidelines outlined in the Ford workshop manual for the specific vehicle model you're working on.



5. Perform a Crank Relearn:
As per the Ford workshop manual, a crank relearn is required after the replacement. This is a critical step to ensure the engine functions correctly with the new crankshaft sensor ring. You can perform the crank relearn using handheld tuning devices or dedicated automotive diagnostic equipment.



6. Completion:
With the crank relearn successfully completed, your vehicle is now ready to go. The new crankshaft sensor ring is in place, ensuring your engine operates at its best.
