Draining Your Fox Body Mustang Fuel Tank | 1986-1993

In this article and video, we will show you both methods to drain your fuel tank. To perform this, you will need at least the following:

• Gloves and Glasses
• Common Hand Tools
• 6ft of 5/16 inner diameter fuel hose
• Jack & Jack Stands
• Fuel Line Disconnects
• Towels
• Jug or Bucket

METHOD 1: DRAINING THE TANK IF PUMP IS STILL WORKING

1. Support the vehicle via a-lift or jack stands.



2. Locate the Schrader valve near the passenger side valve cover.



3. Remove the cap and hold a rag over the valve while you depress the stem with a small screwdriver. This will depressurize the fuel system.



4. Locate the rubber supply hose near the passenger side frame rail and position the drain pan or bucket underneath this area.



5. Disconnect the supply line with a fuel line disconnect tool and allow some of the fuel to drain out.



6. Connect the supply hose to the bulk hose with a coupler of some kind and place this hose inside of a clean fuel jug or bucket.




7. We also recommend hooking up a battery charger before you jump the relay.



8. Go ahead and build a jumper with some 16-gauge wire and spade connectors.



9. The location for the fuel pump relay depends on the year of your fox body. 1986-91 have the relay underneath the driver’s seat so you will have to remove that to gain access.



10. 1992 cars were a split year so the fuel pump relay can be located either underneath the driver seat or the forward most relay underneath the mass air meter.



11. For 1993 cars, the relay is located on the forward most relay underneath the mass air meter. To do this you will need to remove the cold air kit assembly as well as the mass air meter bracket.




12. Go ahead and jump the relay with the jumper and drain the fuel from the tank. Regardless of location, you will jump the relay pins that have the larger gauge wire.

METHOD 2: DRAINING THE TANK IF PUMP IS NOT WORKING

You will have to siphon the gas from the tank, and this is done by:

1. Cutting the hose in a 45-degree angle before inserting it into the filler neck because it will help snake it down.



2. Take a long piece of 5/16 inner diameter hose and insert into the filler neck down into the tank.



3. Use a suitable transfer pump or syphon gun to pull the fuel out of the tank into the clean bucket or jug. Please note that you don’t have to empty the tank completely, just enough to make tank a little easier to handle.
