How To Install Mustang Steering Wheel (15-23)

How To Remove & Install Mustang S550 Steering Wheel

Updating your 2015-2023 S550 Mustang steering wheel is a great way to improve the car's interior looks and driving dynamics. For the Mustang V6, Ecoboost, and GT, the stock steering wheel was thin and not always leather wrapped on the base models. Changing out the steering wheel to a GT350 or similar steering wheel will greatly improve the interior of your Mustang.

Follow along with our GT350 steering wheel install on the 2015-23 Mustang. Some connection differences may vary on automatic or 2018+ Mustangs, but the installation will generally be the same.

Tools Required

3mm Allen Key
T20 Torx Driver
1/2" 24mm Deep Socket
6" 1/2" Extension
1/2" Drive Socket Wrench
10mm socket or wrench
Push pin removal tool

Installation Instructions

Start by opening your hood. Locate your battery on the passenger-side firewall. It will be covered by a black cover retained by push pins.
Use a 10mm to remove the negative battery cable from the battery. Secure the battery cable to ensure it will not accidentally come in contact with the battery terminals.
Inside the car, slide the 3mm Allen key through the two small holes on each side of the steering wheel. Push the release pins toward the center of the steering wheel and pull out on the airbag. Once the airbag is free, carefully roll it over and disconnect the connections. Set the airbag assembly aside.
Remove the trim pieces with the T20 Torx driver. Disconnect the electrical connections from the cruise control and related buttons on the factory steering wheel.
Loosen and remove the 24mm bolt and then carefully remove the factory steering wheel from the car.
Install your new steering wheel and tighten the previously removed 24mm bolt. Torque to 35 lb-ft.
Re-install your steering wheel controls and tighten the T20 Torx screws. Reconnect the electrical connections. Some steering wheels may require you to transfer your old airbag retaining clips to the new steering wheel.
Reconnect the airbag electrical connections and snap them back into place. Ensure the airbag is fully seated into the retaining clips and is not loose.
Reconnect the negative battery cable and tighten the 10mm nut.
Reattach the battery cover.

There is also a thin strip of ebony leather sewn dead center at the top of the steering wheel to help with wheel orientation. Believe it or not, this is also GT350 specific since the ‘R’ model features a red center stripe and red stitching.

Hey! What’s happening guys? Landan here with Late Model Restoration. Today I’m going to be giving you my quick review on the Shelby GT350 steering wheel fitting all 2015-2016 Mustang.

This Ford original steering wheel is standard equipment on the much anticipated Shelby GT350. It features ebony-colored Alcantara suede around the top and sides; with ebony leather on the bottom. White, cross-weaved stitching is used to embroider the fabric around the inside of the steering wheel for that luxurious, supercar look. Its race inspired, flat bottom shape sports a 14.8 inch diameter and there is even thicker grip areas at the ten and two hand positions.

Last but not least, there is a thin strip of ebony leather sewn dead center at the top of the steering wheel to help with wheel orientation. Believe it or not, this is also GT350 specific since the ‘R’ model features a red center stripe and red stitching.

Moving forward to the fitment and required tools for this Shelby GT350 steering wheel; You’ll need to transfer over your trim, audio and cruise controls, and of course, your airbag. Any of you guys with an automatic transmission will need to transfer over the paddle shifters and any associated trim and mechanisms. This steering wheel will come with a new electrical harness already installed.

The only tools required, is a 3mm Allen key to release the air bag clips which are accessed through the small holes on each side of the steering wheel, a T-20 Torx driver to remove the eight screws securing the trim to the steering wheel, and a 24mm socket to remove the steering wheel to steering shaft bolt. A cordless or air powered impact will help tremendously when loosening this bolt. However, it isn’t on there very tight, so your standard half inch drive socket wrench will work as well.

A couple of other things you’ll want to keep in mind, is to be sure and disconnect the negative battery cable before you begin. Since you will be working with the air bag, work as safe and as careful as you can. Upon removal of the air bag module and the bolt securing the wheel to the steering shaft; be extremely careful not to damage the clock spring.

Overall, this install should take you around 30 minutes to complete and when you’re all done, this steering wheel is definitely worth the money spent. Be sure and reconnect your negative battery cable, and make sure all of the controls work, because this wheel utilizes all of your factory steering wheel controls.
