Basic maintenance is more than just an oil change or a tire rotation. Depending on the part, some require routine upkeep to ensure they remain dialed in. The 10-hole center cap is one of those parts.

Popular on the 1979-1993 Fox Body Mustangs, the 10-hole wheels use a stainless steel center cap that requires a specific cleaning regimen. In this video, Landan covers everything you need to know about 10-hole wheel center caps. These topics include removing the cap, cleaning the cap, and the right way to install the cap.

Tools and Materials:

  • Inexpensive pry tool or panel removal tool (non-metal)
  • Non-abrasive cleaner wax (e.g., Meguiar's)
  • Microfiber towels
  • Center caps to clean
  • Patience and attention to detail

Step 1: Removing the Center Cap:

  • Locate the notch on the wheel where the center cap is seated.
  • Insert the plastic pry tool's hook end into the notch, gently lifting the cap.
  • Rotate the tool outward while keeping your thumb and hand on the cap to prevent it from flying off.
  • Slowly release the cap, treating it as if you're pushing it back into place.
  • The cap may be snug, so work around the perimeter if necessary until it's removed.

Step 2: Cleaning the Center Cap:

  • Use a non-abrasive cleaner wax to clean the center cap.
  • Apply a small amount of cleaner wax to a microfiber towel.
  • Roll the towel tightly and spread the product on the cap's surface.
  • Gently rub the towel in back-and-forth circular motions to clean the cap.
  • Focus on removing fingerprints, stains, and debris without using excessive pressure.
  • Pay attention to detail, ensuring not to damage the cap's finish.
  • Buff the cap using a clean microfiber towel in circular motions to achieve a clean shine.
  • Repeat the process for any remaining center caps, cleaning both the front and back sides.

Step 3: Reinstalling the Center Cap:

  • Hold the center cap with the logo facing the valve stem's direction.
  • Place the cap onto the wheel, aligning it with the designated area.
  • Gently tap the outer perimeter of the cap using your palm to start seating it.
