How To Remove & Install Fox Body Pulleys | 79-93 Mustang

In this article we will be covering the removal and installation of the factory water pump, crank, and alternator pulleys.

1. Start by disconnecting the negative battery cable.



2. With the belt still installed, loosen, but do not remove the crank and water pump pulley bolts.



3. Remove the serpentine belt by rotating the tensioner counter-clockwise.



4. Remove the bolts from the water pump.



5. Remove the fan from the pilot on the water pump and leave it sitting within the shroud. Remove the water pump and crank pulleys.



6. To gain access to the alternator, pull back the upper radiator hose and strap this out of the way if needed.



7. Remove the alternator mounting bolts. Lift the alternator out of the bracket to easily access the pulley. Using an impact, loosen and remove the nut and washer.



8. Remove the stock pulley and install the new pulley. Re-use the stock nut and/or washer or replace them if needed.



9. Re-install the alternator and mounting bolts. Fully tighten the bolts.



10. Install the new water pump pulley and the fan. Loosely tighten the hardware.



11. Install the crank pulley and loosely tighten the hardware.



12. Use this time to inspect the serpentine belt. Check for obvious flaws or cracks and replace the belt if needed.



13. Reinstall the serpentine belt. Rotate the tensioner and verify that the belt is properly positioned onto each pulley.



14. With the serpentine belt installed, fully tighten the water pump and crank pulley retaining bolts.



15. Reconnect the negative battery cable and you're all done!
