How To Install Mustang Fuel Filler Neck Grommet (82-04)
The fuel filler neck grommet is found outside your gas tank on the same side as your fuel door. It holds the filler tube in place and, over the years, can deteriorate and leak fuel. This guide will walk you through removing and installing a new grommet. This procedure must be done with the tank with little to no fuel.
Installation Instructions:
Disconnect battery.
Relieve the fuel system pressure from the Shrader valve. (if equipped)
Raise the car, and support it with jack stands.
Remove the right rear wheel.
Clean the filler tube and area around the filler tube gasket.
Remove the 5/16" bolt holding the filler tube to the fuel tank.
Remove the fuel cap and remove the three retaining screws holding the filler neck to the quarter panel using a 5/16" socket (1982-93). In 1994-04 there will be three 8mm bolts.
1994-04 will require the removal of the two T15 screws holding the fuel door to the body and the two T15 fuel door bumpers.
Remove the four fuel filler to body seal screws.
1982-93, remove the two 1/2" bolts that hold the fuel tank straps to the body. 1994-04, three 13mm bolts will hold the fuel tank straps to the body.
Supporting the tank, lower the tank slightly and shift it to the driver's side of the car.
Wiggle out the fuel filler neck from the tank. Removal of the fuel lines may be necessary to get enough clearance to remove the fuel filler neck from the tank.
Remove the fuel filler neck grommet from the tank. Note the orientation for the installation of the new grommet.
Install the new grommet. A light coat of rubber-safe lubricant can help with this installation onto the tank and the installation of the fuel tank filler neck to the new grommet.
