What Does An Expansion Tank Do?An expansion tank connects to your lower radiator hose in order to catch extra coolant or air that is in the system once the engine has reached operating temperature. The coolant expansion tank is also known as a coolant overflow tank or engine coolant de-gas bottle. The expanding coolant pours over into the expansion tank and then siphons back into the cooling system when temperatures and pressures decrease. This helps keep the radiator full at all times and eliminates any air in the cooling system, allowing your radiator to be more effective.
