You may ask, "what does a distributor do?" or, "How do I know when to replace it?" Well, to sum it all up - the distributor generates power that is distributed to the spark plugs. That then allows the spark plugs to spark & ignite the fuel/air mixture. Telltale signs of a bad distributor are generally obvious. Most occur upon start-up or the lack thereof. As soon as you crank your truck, if there is a high-pitched shriek, the distributor cap and rotor need to be cleaned/replaced or the entire distributor needs to be replaced if that doesn't fix your problem. Difficulty starting? Another telltale sign. Lastly, shaking! If your truck is shaking while it is started - generally most often during idle - you may need a new distributor.
