The distributor in your Mustang plays a crucial part in the ignition system. The distributor generates power that is distributed to the spark plugs. That then allows the spark plugs to spark & ignite the air/fuel mixture. A loose distributor can cause inaccurate timing and prevent the engine from running properly, which could lead to even further issues. Installation Note
With aftermarket distributors, there may be slight variances in the distributor flange diameter, thickness, and bolt-hole locations causing fitment issues. To correct this, slight filing may be required on the radiused edge of the hold down if interferences occur with the distributor flange.
