Ensure the dash in your Fox Body looks factory fresh with this 5.0 Resto 1987-1989 Mustang lower trim panel kit! This trim panel, also known as the "Knee Panel," is usually the victim of holes drilled into it for buttons or switches. Years of removal and reinstallation cause the mounting points to break.
5.0 Resto's trim panel replaces these holes and broken mounting points with a fresh lower dash trim panel. To provide a complete solution, 5.0 Resto includes a new die-cut foam pad in the correct durometer to reduce rattles and replace what's usually missing from the factory panel. This panel arrives in a neutral gray finish that can easily be painted to match your interior. We suggest our selection of 1979-93 Mustang Interior Paint. 5.0 Resto's lower dash trim panel kit is the perfect restoration piece for your Fox Body interior!
Follow along as we show you how to install the lower dash trim panel on your 1987-1989 Fox Body Mustang.
Tools & Materials Needed
We also offer a complete lower dash panel kit that includes more than just the trim panel. This kit includes:
- (1) Lower Column Shroud Extension
- (1) Fuse Panel Cover
- (1) Fuse Location Decal
Installation Steps
- Before installing, you will want to prep and paint the lower dash trim panel. To begin, remove the (2) anti-vibration rubber caps and the (2) metal clips (carefully maneuver back and forth and up to remove, so you do not break the tabs).
- Thoroughly scuff and clean the panel with soap and water. Once dry, you will need to mask off the trim foam area for paint. We recommend aligning the trim foam first to measure for the correct location.
- Spray the backside first with adhesion promoter and apply a thin layer of paint. Let it dry and apply multiple coats within a 5-10 minute waiting period. Do this until satisfied, let the back dry and repeat this process on the front. You'll then want to wait 24 hours for the paint to dry before installing completely.
- Once the paint is dry, remove the masking tape and apply the foam to the panel. Work your way from one side to the other.
- Reinstall the anti-vibration caps and metal clips (The metal clips do have a snug fit, so do not apply too much pressure). The metal clips must face up towards the top of the panel.
- Loosen and remove the (2) attaching hardware for the lower trim panel. Then pull and remove the original lower trim panel.
- Position the new panel into place and insert the metal clips into the dash.
- Align the (2) screw holes and loosely install the provided trim screws. Use a 7mm socket or a T-20 Torx driver. Then run them down evenly and ensure that the screws are snug. Do not overtighten.
- After that, you're all finished!
This installation should take about 3-4 hours to complete (including paint). If you still need to fix your 87-89 Fox Body, be sure to order your Lower Dash Trim Kit! To see more how-to and install videos for the Fox Body, be sure to head over to our YouTube channel and subscribe today!
