How To Replace 1996-2004 Mustang GT Thermostat 4.6L 2V

The thermostat in your 1996-2004 Mustang GT is responsible for regulating temperatures in your 4.6L 2V engine. Over time, they can become stuck open or stuck closed, causing an overheating issue if stuck closed or an issue of not hitting operating temperature if stuck open. Today, we walk you through the easy steps of replacing your thermostat.

Tools Required:

• Socket Set
• Drain Pan
• Pliers/Clamp Tool

Removal Steps

1. Partially Drain Your Coolant System
   • Place A Drain Pan Under Your Radiator
   • Locate & Loosen Your Petcock For Your Radiator
   • Partially Drain The Radiator
   • Tighten The Petcock Back Up
     
     
2. Remove Your Thermostat Housing
   • Loosen The Hose Clamp Holding The Upper Radiator Hose To The Thermostat Housing
   • Set The Upper Hose Out Of The Way
   • Remove The Vacuum Hose From The IAC Controller
   • Loosen & Remove The 4 Bolts From The Alternator Bracket & Remove Bracket
   • Remove The Two 10mm Bolts Holding The Thermostat Housing & Remove Housing
   • Remove Thermostat
     
     
     
     
3. Prep For Install
   • Use A Microfiber Towel To Clean The Mating Surfaces
   • We Chose To Drill Out Our Check Valve To Help With Bleeding With An 1/8" Drill Bit
     
     
     
     
4. Reinstall The Thermostat
   • Install The New Thermostat, Followed By The Gasket
   • Replace The Housing, Alternator Brackets, Hoses, and Anything Else You Removed.
   
   
   
   
5. Refill The Coolant
   • Top Off The Coolant With The Same Amount Of Coolant You Removed
   • Start The Vehicle, Get To Operating Temperature, and Check For Any Leaks.
