How To Replace 1996-2004 Mustang GT Water Pump

The water pump on your Mustang is responsible for circulating coolant throughout your cooling system. Over the years, your water pump may experience a failed bearing, leaking gaskets, or the fins inside the pump may deteriorate. Replacing a water pump on a 1994-2004 Mustang GT is fairly easy and can be completed with common hand tools. Follow along as we walk you through the easy steps.

Removal Steps

1. Remove The Water Pump Pulley Bolts
   
   • Before removing the accessory belt, loosen the 10mm water pump pulley bolts. Do not remove them completely at this step.
     
     
     
     
     
2. Remove The Accessory Belt & Water Pump Pulley Bolts/Pulley
   
   • Using a breaker bar and 3/8" adapter, loosen the tensioner and remove the accessory belt.
   • Now you can remove the water pump pulley bolts and pulley
     
     
     
     
     
3. Loosen and Remove Water Pump Bolts
   • Place a drain pan under the water pump.
   • Using a 13mm socket, remove the 4 water pump bolts securing the pump to the block.
   • Removing the alternator may be necessary if the water pump will not slide out.
   • Light taps with a rubber mallet can help free up a stuck water pump.
     
     
     
     
     
4. Clean Up Mating Surfaces Before Installing New Water Pump
   • Brake Clean, A Grey Scotch Brite Pad, and WD-40 can be used to clean things up.
     
     
     
     
     
5. Prepare The New Pump For Installation
   • Lightly lubricate the O-ring with petroleum jelly.
   • Lightly apply anti-sieze to the mating surface of the water pump.
   • Torque the bolts to spec to ensure a secure fit.
     
     
     
     
     
6. Install The New Pump
   • Installation is reverse of removal.
   • Ensure all bolts are torqued to spec.
     
     
     
     
     
7. Top Off Coolant & Check For Leaks
   • Fill your coolant reservoir to replace any lost coolant.
   • Start the vehicle and get to operating temperature to check for any leaks.
