Mechanical
The 1999 SVT Cobra had the Teksid Block and in contrast, the 2001 SVT Cobra Block was changed to the Windsor Aluminum Plant (or WAP). The Teksid is regarded to be stronger than the 2001 WAP version. A small number of 2001 Cobra’s did receive a Teksid block from the factory or getting a replacement engine.
The 1999 Cars underperformed out of the box and were slower compared to the B-Head 1996-98 Cobras. As a result, Ford issued a recall on all 1999 Cobras and replaced their Intake Manifold, Revised Computer Components, and even the Exhaust system received changes from the Catalytic Converters back to the end of the Tailpipes to product the actual 320 Horsepower that was advertised at the crank.
Also, insufficient cooling around cylinders #6/#7/#8 leads to the valves overheating resulting in them not seating correctly. This caused a ticking or pinging noise resonating from the Driverside Cylinder Head. Ford Revised the Cylinder Heads and issued a technical service bulletin (TSB#03256/NHTSA#10008278 and TSB#03164/NHTSA#10003118) to replace the cylinder heads that had the issue with a New Cylinder Head that had improved coolant flow.
The 2001 Cobra now was equipped with Tremec’s TR-3650 5-speed Transmission instead of the T45 5-Speed that was used in 1999. The 2001 car was also upgraded with 31 Spline Axleshafts and Differential compared to the 28 Spline for 1999.
Interior and Exterior
While the 1999 SVT Cobras had standard GT seats, the 2001 cars had specific seats with Leather Bolsters, a suede-like microfiber insert called Alcantara, as well as larger Headrests
These year SVT Cobra’s had a unique Heat Extractor Hood that had a crescent hood vent toward the front of the hood to stand out from the Standard GT hood. This hood ended upon the Pony Package V6 Cars in 2003 and 2004 when Ford produced the powerful Terminator Cobra!
Similar to the 1996-98 Cobra’s, the rear bumper now reads, “COBRA” versus “MUSTANG” that was on the 1999 Cars. The Trunklid Badge now reads, “SVT” and dropped the word, “COBRA” that was under the SVT badge on the 1999 cars. This was an easy way to distinguish the SVT Cobra from the base v6 and GT Mustangs!
As for wheels, both the 1999 and 2001 SVT Cobra were equipped with 17x8 Silver powercoated, aluminum 5 Spoke wheels. The 2001 cars had the option for a Polished Chrome version of the same wheel. These chrome wheels were later used on the 2003 and 2004 Mustangs as a Premium Option as well.
