If you own a Fox body Mustang with a hatchback, and you've already replaced the floor carpet, then you've probably realize the hard way that your hatch carpet isn't as good off as you thought it was. Hatch carpet actually leads a little bit harder life when it comes to UV fading because of that huge window that hangs out right over it's head. Not to mention all the traffic going in and out of the trunk.
Luckily the installation of the hatch carpet is a lot less intrusive than the floor carpet, and can be done in an afternoon. Because the hatch carpet we use comes from ACC, as well as the floor carpet, the color match will be the same. To install your new hatch carpet, you will need to remove your rear seats. And you can check out our seat removal video on a step-by-step of how to do just that. With your seat backs out of the car, go ahead and lay them face down on the table, and we can get started.
Remove the single screw retaining the seat release leader. Remove the three screws that retain the trim bezel. With a pushpin removal tool, release the pushpins around the perimeter of the seat upholstery. Your pushpins may break, but don't worry, we offer brand new replacements.
Roll the sides of the upholstery out of the way. Remove the two screws at the bottom of the carpet, and pry out any staples. Toss your old carpet in the trash, and place your new carpet on the seat back. And using an appropriate tool, make holes in the carpet to correspond with the holes in the plastic seat frame.
Re-engage the 19 pushpins into the plastic seat frame. Reinstall the two screws at the bottom of the carpet. Reinstall the latch lever, and the trim bezel. Repeat all these steps for the other seat back.
For the hatch floor carpet, start by removing the two screws from one of the flaps. Pull the carpet upward, toward the front of the car, to release the retaining clip. Repeat these steps for the other flap.
Remove the old hatch floor carpet from the car. Lay your new hatch carpet into place, and engage the retainers for the flaps. Reinstall the four screws removed earlier.
And there you go, another easy way to save yourself some money by replacing old parts on your Mustang all by yourself. Be sure and check out our other installation videos, and browse our full Fox Mustang parts section at latemodelrestoration.com.
