Mustang Door Panel Insert Installation

The 94-04 Mustang had a neat little Door Panel Insert integrated in to the Door panel that housed the Switch Panel as well as the Door Pull. Because this is a high-wear area & the Mustang Door Panel Insert is plastic, they are known to break. Sometimes only the Door Panel Insert Retaining Clip is missing or faulty, & we have those too, just in case!

The odds are if you own or have owned a 94-04 Mustang then you have experienced issues with a door panel insert. Often these scratch, start peeling or just plain break. No worries... we have you covered when it comes to replacement door panel inserts. Installation is quick and easy. We offer Ford Original door panel inserts for all models of Mustangs 94-04. They come in either black or charcoal finish depending on year model. The 94-98 Mustang door panel inserts feature a true black finish where the 99-04 Mustang door panel inserts feature a charcoal finish. If you have a parchment (tan) panel insert you will need to purchase some interior paint to make these match. Another notable difference in the door panel inserts is the fact that the driver's side door panel insert is different for the coupes and convertibles. Convertibles have an extra set of quarter window switches.

For the install, I used the new Mustang aftermarket door panel insert. It is only available for the driver's side door and comes in a black textured finish. This door panel insert matches the 94-98 style black door panel inserts.  If you wish to use it on your 99-04 Mustang, you will need to paint it to match the color of your door panel - 99-04 Mustang Interior Paint. This door panel insert includes a new clip.  Note: texture on the aftermarket door panel insert is not an exact match to the original piece.

Installation:

  1. Start by prying the top of the door panel insert away from the door panel. You will notice a small indention that you can insert a small flat head screw driver into to pry. With the top pried away from the door panel you can now pull up on the panel insert. If your panel insert clip is in good working order,  you will need to pull up with some force near the rear of the insert where the clip is located. Often times the door panel insert clips loosen or stop working - especially if the door panel insert has been removed a couple times. If the rear of door panel insert does not stay in place, you may only need to replace the clips.

  2. With the door panel insert removed from the door panel, you can now turn the door panel insert so that you can access the wiring harness connections to the mirror switch, door lock switch and window switches. This is a good time to replace any switches that are not functioning. For easier access to the lock and window switches, disconnect the mirror switch first. Pry up on the grey tab and pull the wiring harness connection out of the mirror switch. The lock and mirror switches are held in place by two philips head screws. Remove the screws and the switch assembly can be pull away for the door panel insert. Next, remove the window switch from our old door panel insert. The switch is held in place by tabs on all four sides. Press in the tabs and push the switch out of the door panel insert. I found that starting 1 or 2 of the tabs with a flat head screw driver works best. Continue to push and hold the slight pressure as you push in each tab and the switch will "pop" right out.

  3. Now you can insert the mirror switch into the new door panel insert. Next install the lock and window switch assembly with the two screws from the original door panel insert. Then connect the wiring harness connection to mirror switch. Simply align the new door panel insert and press it into place. Since the new door panel insert includes a new clip, it may take quite a bit of pressure to get the clip to snap into place. You can now enjoy to new door panel insert.

What’s up everybody? Landan with LMR.com! Welcome to quick my overview and install on this door panel insert kit designed for the 1994 to 2004 Mustangs.

Having owned two New Edge Mustangs, I am personally all too familiar with damaged door panel inserts.

These things are often times not removed properly and intern will have broken clips or the lock and unlock switch bracket has detached from the insert itself.

Here in front of me are high-quality reproductions of the factory door panel inserts.

Each insert is constructed from durable, molded ABS plastic, and incorporates the factory-like black finish and texture.

Out of the box, these inserts are a direct bolt-in for 94 to 98 Mustangs because of the black finish.

All other interior colors will need to be painted to match with our interior trim paint.

Before you begin, take this time to paint your new inserts.

Reference our detailed video on how to properly paint interior components.
To remove the old insert, pull down and out from the top.

With the top now removed, pull up on the rear of the insert to dislodge the metal clip.

In our case, the rear of the panel was secured with a deck screw.

Rotate the insert over and disconnect the power mirror switch if equipped.

Loosen and remove the two Phillips head screws securing the switch board to the insert.

With the old insert on a work bench, depress the two clips on the mirror switch to remove it from the insert.

Clean the mirror switch if needed and transfer it to the new insert.

Reconnect the mirror switch electrical connection.

Reinstall the switch board and carefully tighten the two retaining screws.

The rear clip is preinstalled on the new insert.

Align the rear clip and then work the insert into the door.

Fully seat the rear slip and then position the top tab underneath the door.

Repeat these steps for the side and then you’re all finished.

All in all here guys, these door panel inserts are a great restoration piece to get the interior of your SN95 or New Edge Mustang looking the way it’s supposed to!
