How To Install 5.0 Resto Shock Access Covers | 1983-86 Mustang

These shock access covers if missing or damaged can be an eyesore for the rear hatch area of your Mustang. 5.0 Resto has fixed a known problem again with these new Shock Access Covers. These covers will offer a correct fit and finish just like the factory options. Each one of these kits will include both the right and left-hand covers, and we also include the correct Phillips head screws to hold these in place.

Let’s head over to our 1986 SVO we have here in the shop today and we show you how these go on.

1. First, start off by opening your hatch. As you can see here, one of our covers was already missing from this car.



2. Removal will be as simple as taking the one Phillips head retaining screw out and then you can pull the cover out of place. You can use a small trim removal tool to release all of the tabs from the hatch panel.




3. Now we can unbox our new 5.0 Resto shock access covers and inspect them for any obvious flaws or defects before installation.



4. Since these will be molded in a neutral grey finish, we will be painting these today to match our SVO. Using some grey scuff pads and a bucket of soapy water, thoroughly clean all of the surfaces and make sure you allow time to dry.



5. Next, take a clean rag or paper towel and clean all of the surfaces using denatured alcohol or any standard oil and grease remover.



6. Hang up your parts and now give them a few (2-3) coats of your year’s interior color paint. Start off with a light coat first and make sure you keep your nozzle 6-10 inches away. Repeat with a few medium to heavy passes and allow 15-20 mins of dry times between each coat.



7. Going back in with these will be as easy as the removal.



8. Slide each of the covers into place aligning all of the tabs and then tighten down the Phillips head screw.



9. Check over your work and you are all done.

Alright, everyone, this one is a super simple job to do. This one should roughly take you about an hour to an hour and a half to complete. It is some of these little touches for an interior restoration that can drastically change the overall appearance of your ride.
