On most Mustangs now, the factory shifter handle is long gone having been swapped out to an aftermarket unit, sometimes giving you an awkward shifting position due to the shortened handles. Whether you want to restore your Mustang to the original or replace a damaged handle, 5.0 Resto has you taken care of. The provided handle works with both the factory shift knob and most aftermarket shift knobs with the factory thread pitch.
Constructed from durable, heavy-duty steel to the factory length and bends this handle also features the correct M12x1.75 thread pitch. A satin black e-coat finish is applied to mimic the original black-painted handle. Utilizing a clamshell design with preinstalled rubber isolators and sleeves, 5.0 Resto's handle exactly replicates the original handle! Rubber isolators on the handle and clamshell reduce driveline vibration felt through the handle while driving. A new rubber shift boot support to hold your shift boot up to the bottom of the knob ensures there won't be any unsightly gaps. 5.0 Resto is committed to providing accurate restoration parts for your Mustang by making sure these are made to factory dimensions and tolerances! Installation can be performed with common hand tools using the supplied silver zinc plate shifter bolts.
Tools Needed:
- Socket Wrench
- Blue Thread Locking Compound
- Open End Wrench (for specific setups)
Step 1: Remove the Old Shift Knob
- Rotate the shift knob counterclockwise to remove it. If you have a factory-style shift knob, there won't be a jam nut.
- For specific setups (such as a jam nut), use the correct open-end wrench to break the jam nut free.
- Once the jam nut is loosened, remove the shift knob.
Step 2: Remove Shifter Bezel and Boot
- If you have a Fox Body or SN car, gently pull up or away from the console to free the shifter bezel from the console clips.
- For SN/New Edge cars, disconnect any electrical connections on the bezel.
- Carefully remove the boot and bezel together.
Step 3: Prepare for Installation
- If you have an aftermarket shifter handle, take note of how it attaches. Aftermarket shifters may require nuts for attachment.
- If necessary, break free any nuts or hardware attached to the lever.
- Clean the lever and attachment points if needed.
Step 4: Attach the Factory-Style Shifter Handle
- Position the factory-style shifter handle's clamshell onto the lever as shown.
- Apply a drop of blue Loctite onto the retaining bolts.
- Insert and tighten the bolts through the appropriate holes in the lever.
Step 5: Secure the Shifter Handle
- Use a socket wrench to snugly tighten the retaining bolts. The torque spec is 27 pound-feet.
- For added safety, you can move the shifter down into the reverse position while torquing.
- Do not overtighten – snug is sufficient.
Step 6: Reassemble the Interior
- Adjust the boot stop on the shifter handle, moving it up the handle.
- Reinstall the bezel, making sure any electrical connections are reconnected if applicable.
- Reseat the bezel into its proper position.
Step 7: Reattach the Shift Knob
- Reattach the shift knob by rotating it clockwise onto the shifter.
- Do not overtighten; just ensure it's snug.
