How To Install 1979-86 Mustang Automatic Shifter Bezel Seal

1. Before you begin you will want to either chock the tires or set the parking brake on the vehicle. You will have to put the shifter in neutral to perform this replacement and the car could roll if you don't take the proper precautions.


2. Remove the handle. This is held on by set screws on the early cars and plastic spring retainers on 84-86 cars. On the 84-86 use a small pick and apply upward pressure on the handle itself and the fingers will release.

3. Remove the console trim plate. Pry the forward most side up to release the retaining tabs and once release slide the whole plate forward to release the rear tabs.


4. Remove the 4 retaining screws holding the shift bezel on the shifter.


5. Flip the bezel over to reveal the shifter rod seal location.


6. Use a pick to disengage retainers used to hold the seal in place.


7. Re-install the seal and use a small socket to press retainer tabs back into place.
