How’s it going everybody? Landan here with Late Model Restoration. Today I’m going to be showing you 5.0 Resto’s exclusive replacement steering wheel fitting your 1990-1993 Fox Mustang.
Yes, you heard that right! 5.0 Resto hit yet another home run with their replacement steering wheel for any of you that own a 90-93 Fox with an airbag and cruise control. This steering wheel is manufactured around a new frame and NOT a re-manufactured or recovered core. It mimics the factory look and feel with a synthetic leather material stitched closed with high quality, black stitching.
You must reuse your cruise control switches, air bag and horn buttons. However, if you’re looking to freshen up those horn buttons as well, you can pick up a set over at LMR.com.
Alright guys, I’m going to jump over here to this ’92 coupe and walk you through the easy steps on replacing your worn out factory steering wheel. Before I begin, you will need a steering wheel puller, which you can grab off of our site whenever your purchase your new 5.0 Resto steering wheel.
To begin installation, remove the negative battery cable. Loosen and remove the two Phillips head screws securing the upper and lower steering column trim. One screw is easy to locate, however the other one is right beside the key release button. Carefully pry apart the upper and lower column trim pieces. Remove the four 10mm bolts securing the air bag assembly to the steering wheel. Carefully pry out the air bag.
Disconnect the airbag electrical connection and set the air bag assembly aside. Loosen and remove the 15mm steering wheel to steering shaft bolt. This is where you need the steering wheel removal tool. Find the two locating bolts that match the steering wheel threads. Slide them through the provisioned slots on the steering wheel puller. Finger tighten the two outside bolts. Unscrew the middle bolt enough to slide the spacer in-between the steering shaft and middle bolt. Now, rotate the middle bolt clockwise with a socket and socket wrench until the steering wheel can be removed with a slight tug.
Disassemble the steering wheel puller tool. Before removing the wheel, disconnect the horn and cruise control harness. Now you can remove the old steering wheel from the steering shaft. Carefully pry apart the plastic wire cover. It is attached to the steering wheel via push pins on each side of the cover. Disconnect both horn buttons from the main electrical harness. Carefully pry up on both horn buttons and remove them from the factory steering wheel. Remove the cruise control switch bezels by carefully prying up on the inner tabs and then the outer tabs.
Both cruise control button assemblies are attached to the steering wheel with two Phillips head screws. Remove these and set them aside. Transfer the cruise control buttons and main electrical harness to the new steering wheel. Retighten the Phillips head screws. Slide the horn button electrical connections through the provisioned hole. Plug them in and tuck the wires behind the previously removed wire cover.
Carefully snap the cruise control bezels back onto the buttons. Pass the two electrical connections through the new steering wheel and then slide the new wheel onto the steering shaft. Be sure and align the steering wheel with the steering shaft before tightening it down. Re-thread the bolt by hand and then fully tighten it down with a cordless or air powered impact. Reconnect the electrical connections and re-position the air bag assembly.
Re-tighten the four previously removed bolts and then re-install the upper and lower column trim.
Reconnect the negative battery cable and make sure the horn and cruise control buttons function properly.
Double check your work, and you’re all finished!
As far as installation goes, this one should take you roughly thirty to forty-five minutes from start to finish. The only specialty tool needed is the steering wheel puller other than that guys the only other tool I would recommend is a cordless or air powered impact.
