How To Change An Air Filter In A Ford Mustang

In this article, LMR.com covers how to change the air filter in your Mustang. We will be performing the work on this '92 Fox Body V8 and we will also list out additional V8 applications below.

86-93 V8 Installation Instructions

Locate the retaining clips on the air box lid. Un-hook the lid and set it aside.

Remove the old air filter and properly dispose of it. Inspect every oil change if you’re using a high-flow, washable, reusable filter. Clean this filter per the manufacturer’s instructions with the appropriate filter cleaning kit.

Place in your new air filter and re-hook the retaining clips.

94-04 V8 Installation Instructions

Disconnect the wire harness from the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor and Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor.
Unfasten two latches on the engine tray to the MAF sensor and separate them.
Position the MAF sensor out of the way.
Remove the air cleaner element from the engine tray.
Inspect the filter housing and clean if any residual debris is present.
Align the tab on MAF with the slot on the engine tray and fasten the two latches.
Connect the wire harness to the MAF sensor and IAT sensor.

05-09 V8 Installation Instructions

Unsnap both of the clips located on the backside of the air box.
Lift up on the filter housing lid and slide it forward to remove the lid from the alignment tabs.
Remove the filter element from the filter housing. Inspect the filter housing and clean if any residual debris is present.
To install, reverse the removal procedure.

10-14 V8 Installation Instructions

Unsnap both of the clips located on the backside of the air box.
Lift up on the filter housing lid and slide it forward to remove the lid from the alignment tabs.
Remove the filter element from the filter housing. Inspect the filter housing and clean if any residual debris is present.
To install, reverse the removal procedure.

15-23 V8 Installation Instructions

Disconnect the MAF sensor electrical connector.
Detach and position the wire harness from the air cleaner.
Unsnap both of the clips located on the outside edge of the airbox lid.
Lift up on the filter housing lid and slide it toward the engine to remove the lid from the alignment tabs.
Remove the filter element from the filter housing. Inspect the filter housing and clean if any residual debris is present.
To install, reverse the removal procedure.

How’s it going everybody! Landan with Late Model Restoration. In this installment of LMR Basics, I’m going to give you a general idea on changing the air filter in your Mustang. I’ll be performing the work on this 92 Fox Body and will be using a genuine Motorcraft air filter.

Begin by locating the retaining clips on the air box lid. Unhook the clips and position the lid aside. Remove the old filter and properly dispose of it. Position the new filter into place in the correct orientation. Reinstall the lid and re-hook the clips. Give it a solid once over and it’s that easy.

Replacing an air filter can be accomplished by just about any one. We carry a wide selection of factory and aftermarket, stock-style high flow air filters for your 1979 to present Mustang. I would check the owner’s manual to see how often the filter needs to be changed. If you’re using a high-flow, washable and re-usable fitler; inspect it every oil change. Clean this filter per the manufacturer’s instruction with the appropriate filter cleaning kit.
