Silver & Grays are always a touch polarizing when it comes to exterior paint options. While they are some of the most popular hues in the automotive market, along with white and black, they work well to accent the lines of Mustangs and can offer subtle elegance. Silver & Gray paint may radically transform the appearance and design of a car in rare cases. These color options can quickly sink into obscurity because they are such frequent and popular colors.
Because there are so many paint possibilities of gray and silver, certain vehicles will wear the color better than others. Although many cars have these colors, the Mustang is one of the few models that can carry off the different shades. Ford has built up the Mustang's silver and gray color varieties to be the appropriate colors that properly complement the car. This is accomplished through varying tones and hues gently letting the Mustang stand out in every environment, even with the body lines to pull off the paint. Opal Frost was offered on the SN95 Mustang between 1994-1996. It was quiet enough to avoid being noticed but vibrant enough to draw people's attention as it passed. This paint was reflective enough to give the car a constantly shifting appearance that changed with the light. This color is far more blue than any of the others on the list, and as a result, sticks out.
THE DSG or Dark Shadow Gray Mustang is most famous for being on the 03-04 Mustang Cobra models. Dark Shadow Gray is agreed by many to be the most menacing of the Cobra colors. This is due to its gray shade being so dark that it gives off black undertones. The simple fact that this color has an abbreviated name, "DSG", that is recognized worldwide shows the high value that Mustang enthusiasts have for this color.
Ingot silver fits the contours of the S197 and S550 chassis beautifully and emphasizes the creases and angles throughout the body panels. While Iconic creates a variety of light colors, Ingot Silver contrasts lightness more vividly. In direct sunshine, Ingot seems virtually white, whereas, in the dark, it appears light gray. Because the two are distinct colors of silver paint that reflect light differently, the difference between Iconic Silver and Ingot Silver on the surface is how metallic the color is.
The Tungsten Gray shade was offered on 2006-2007 Mustangs and provides a similar shade to the Eleanor Gray from the 1967 GT500. This was Ford's way of bringing back an iconic color that enthusiasts fell in love with, mainly from the movie "Gone in 60 Seconds". While having a gray shade, it seems to have a bit of purple to give an almost gunmetal look.
Ford's Brilliant Silver Metallic coat was one of the more prevalent colors on the S197, and it was smooth and subtle, complementing both the flat lines of the early S197 and the curves of the later model S197. The fender flares are highlighted in Brilliant Silver Metallic, making them appear larger than they are. As a simple yet attractive silver, this hue can be used as a clean slate for personalization and upgrades such as louvers, hood scoops, spoilers, and other modifications or left alone as a slick paint job.
The Fox Body Mustang's classic Silver paint job is a fantastic example of simple work done right. The silver of the Fox was a simple hue with a lovely gloss that complements the car's boxy shape. The Fox's silver paint, with its flat edges and toned-down appearance, was a perfect complement to the design. This paint color lasts up until the earlier model S197 Mustangs.
Iconic Silver is one of those silver paints that comes up just once in a while and makes the car stand out more visually. Blue colors can be seen around creases and angles in certain lighting, while the rest of the automobile is a near-perfect silver. Iconic Silver is an intriguing hue that gives the S550 a windswept and sleek appearance for a color that is generally seen as boring. Ford has created one of the most beautiful silver color options ever seen on a vehicle.
The newest gray color to grace the Mustang platform is Dark Matter Gray. This looks to be an extremely dark metallic gray Mustang shade that in the right lighting could be confused as black shade. While we still don't know a ton about the color at this time we are extremely excited to see how it will look!
Titanium Frost was quite similar to the Silver paint option, however it differed from Silver by having a slightly different color. Titanium Frost had a slightly tinted pewter finish rather than the natural silver finish of the other alternatives at the time. Titanium Frost is more vivid than the other paint selections on the list, with a particular style of shadowing that makes it appear slightly gold as well as silver. Titanium Frost manages to stand out among all of these silver alternatives.
When Ford released the New Edge Mustang, they opted to provide a wide range of newly created paints that had never been seen before. Satin Silver Metallic was one of the colors available which had a nicely polished silver with undertones of blue and white. This color was so popular that Ford reintroduced it for the early S197 models as well. This paint has a stronger blue tint to it than most silver paint on the Mustang prior to and after this body type, giving it a matte and shiny appearance.
