How To Replace Fox Body Outer Door Belt Weatherstrip | 1987-93

The outer door belt weatherstrips are an essential component to the door of your Fox Mustang. This piece sits between the glass and the outer door belt molding, and is commonly referred to as the “dew wipes”. The reasons why you want to replace these are pretty obvious... Over the years the rubber dry rots and becomes brittle, and the felt lining on the inside of the weatherstrip wears away which can cause annoying squeaks since the glass is rubbing against the rubber.

Our 5.0 Resto outer door belt weatherstrips are a great replacement and feature all of the same characteristics as the factory pieces. They’re black in color, they’re a direct fit replacement, and they pair great with other 5.0 Resto door restoration parts such as outer door belt moldings, run channel trim, and run channel weatherstrips. These outer door belt weatherstrips fit 1987 to 1993 coupe and hatchback Mustangs as well as 1987 t-top and convertible Mustangs. These will not fit 1988 to 1993 convertible models since those cars had their own unique outer door belt weatherstrip which we currently offer those on the site as well.

Today we’re going to be working on one of our shop cars where we recently restored the entire upper door with new outer door belt moldings, run channel weatherstrips, the run channel trim, roof rail moldings, and we even painted the door frames and mirrors with trim black paint to complete the fresh look.

Before you get started, you’ll need to gather a few tools. These tools include:

• drill
• 1/8th" drill bit to drill out the existing rivets
• Phillips head screwdriver
• 9/32 socket
• socket driver
• large plastic pry tool or something equivalent to shield the glass
• (6) 5/32 rivets
• rivet gun
• fresh razor blade
• some cleaning supplies

Now just to clear the air, we completely removed the side mirror from the car because the door panel was already off of the car. To fully remove a power mirror, you’ll have to remove the door panel to disconnect the electrical connection. Check out our 1987-93 Mustang Door Panel Removal Article if you need some help.

1. First, you’ll want to loosen and remove the Phillips head screw securing the inside mirror cover.


2. Set the cover aside and remove the (2) 9/32 nuts that secure the mirror to the door frame. If you aren’t fully removing the mirror, leave this loose as it will help with removing the outer door belt molding.


3. Once the door panel is off of the car, disconnect the electrical connection behind the door frame.


4. Dislodge the harness clip and then remove the mirror from the car.


5. At the rear of the outer door belt molding, loosen and remove the Phillips head screw.


6. Carefully slide back the outer door belt molding a few inches to clear the buttons and then remove the molding from the door.


7. Drill out all (3) of the rivets and use your shielding tool to protect the glass.


8. Whenever the rivets are removed, lift up on the weatherstrip to remove it from the door frame.


9. Use this opportunity to thoroughly clean the area.

Install

1. Place the new weatherstrip on the door frame. If needed, carefully clearance the weatherstrip with a razor blade so that it clears the run channel.


2. Go ahead and install all (3) of the rivets. The order in which you do this does not matter. Be mindful of the painted areas.


3. Reinstall the mirror and retighten the retaining screws.


4. Connect the electrical connection and reposition the harness clip.


5. Reposition the outer door molding over the buttons and slide it forward until it stops. Make sure this molding is properly engaged with the buttons.


6. Reinstall and carefully retighten the rearward screw.


7. Repeat these same steps for the other side.


8. Double-check your work and then you’re good to go!
