Mustang GTS History

1995 offered three different V8 option Mustangs: the GT, the SVT Cobra, and the GTS. Similar to the LX V8 Mustangs of the Fox Body era, the GTS was a stripped-down pony that focus on Muscle rather than Luxury! It was the Ideal Weekend Warrior for the Mustang Fan in the mid-’90s that did not want to break the bank!

What Makes a Mustang GTS Different?

The GTS Mustang shares almost all of the same drivetrain, suspension, and brakes from the GT models: 302 5.0L V8, T5 Manual Transmission, and 4 Wheel Disc Brakes. ABS Brakes, AODE Automatic Transmission, and Keyless Entry were options included in an Option Package.

Here is where the differences come into play! The GTS Mustang and the Base V6 cars shared the same interior comforts. Cloth seats with an optional 4-way power-adjustable seat on the Driverside only. The Windows and door locks were both manual and only the side view mirrors had power. Sunvisor Mirrors were not illuminated compared to the GT and Convertible cars where this was standard.

There were, however, some interior options that could be added to the Base GTS package. Every option that was available for the V6 cars was available additions on this stripped-down GT and were broken down into two groups: Package Group 1 and 2. Group 1 included the following Standard GT options, Power Windows, Power Door Locks, and Remote Decklid Release. Group 2 contained Cruise Control, Dual Illuminated Sunvisor Mirrors, and Premium Sound for the Stereo System. As mentioned previously, ABS Brakes, AODE Automatic Transmission, and Keyless Entry were also options included in Package Option 2 as well. One could order their GTS in its intended, light-weight stripped-down version or with as many options as desired!

1995 was the only year for the GTS option but Ford did offer the 248A package on 1996-1998 GT Models allowing customers to delete many amenities from their Ponycar similar to their older pushrod brothers from 1995.
