Along with the redesign of the Mustang in 1994 Ford also transitioned from a belt driven cooling fan system to a more efficient electric cooling fan assembly. Mustang electric fans are superior to belt driven fan assemblies because they reduce accessory drag, which in turn frees up horsepower and increases gas mileage on your Mustang. Electric cooling fans also facilitate precise fan operation since the Mustang's computer can tell the fan when to turn on and off.

More Efficient, More Difficult To Troubleshoot
Although Mustang electric fans systems are considered superior in some ways they do have different points of failure not found on belt driven fan systems. On a belt driven system the only failure points are the cooling fan itself, the fan clutch or the serpentine belt. On an electric cooling fan system you can have bad electric connections, faulty fan motors, seized bearings and so on, making cooling fan failure harder to diagnose.
