The 1986 Mustang saw the continued development of the 5.0L. The big deal for the 1986 Mustang was the introduction of multi-point fuel injection and the 8.8-inch rear end! Some additional changes included the center high-mount stop lamp and a single key for the door and ignition. Trim levels remained the same as well as the models. However, this was the last year of the SVO Mustang!

In 1986, Mustang sales continued to stay strong and were finally closing the sales gap on the F-body's by outselling both the Camaro and the Firebird. This marked the year where the Mustang finally found its footing again.
