2011 was a significant year for the Mustang. The most important change was the death of the 4.6L. The 2011 Mustang GT came with an all-new 5.0L Coyote engine making 412HP! The 4.0L was also dropped and replaced with a more lightweight 3.7L V6 producing 305HP.
Electronic Power-Assist Steering (EPAS) was available for the first time. This type of power steering allowed for different boost profiles across the model range. For the exterior, a pedestal rear spoiler was also added with a rear deck and hood applique. The front fog lamps were now located to the lower front fascia and in the rear, the faux gas cap with the Mustang running horse was used. For the 5.4L an aluminum cylinder block replaced the iron block. The block's cylinder bores were coated with an iron and iron-oxide composite that was applied with plasma transferred wire arc (PTWA) technology. This coating allowed for the replacement of traditional cast-iron cylinder liners. This marked Ford's first use of this process.
