Take a look as we dive into a few of our Fox Body Mustang project cars to compare and dyno these top Ford engine builds including the Coyote, Windsor, and Godzilla!
Engine swaps in Ford’s Fox chassis cars, mainly Fox Body Mustangs, have been popular for a long time. Why? Well, the Fox chassis is easy to work on, has an abundance of aftermarket parts, and the cars are still somewhat plentiful. Although, they aren’t as cheap as they once were. But, we can say that for just about anything in life.
Over the years, we’ve done some cool projects! It's hard to pick a favorite as they all have their own bit of character and soul. We just like to work on the cars and live the life as our customers do.
This one-of-a-kind complete restoration build features a Gen 2 Coyote 5.0L engine. The Coyote engine has great road manners and driveability. It also has a great robust offering of parts. Due to the displacement of this engine, it's not going to make near the torque as the 393ci engine or the 7.3L Godzilla. The trade-off to that is that due to the design of the Coyote, it has a high RPM capability. You can find all of the detailed information and work that went into this build in the Project Mercury Rising article and view our wide selection of Coyote swap parts!
Our next project car, dubbed Dragula, is a 1988 Fox Body Mustang that features a 393ci swapped Windsor engine. The Windsor engine of the three on this list, is the simplest swap build simply because it is period correct for the car. Some of the 351W specifics that you would need would be the intake, distributor, long tube headers, oil pan, and just a few miscellaneous brackets. What makes this swap a little more difficult is that it's no longer considered a budget swap due to cost increases and availability in cores and crate engines. Not to mention aftermarket availability for EFI components. The final project car on our list will also be the bigger engine of the three at 445ci! The 7.3L Godzilla engine has the ability to make some great power with a simple intake manifold and camshaft swap. This engine will also make a boatload of torque due to what the engine was originally designed for being an F250 and F350 Superduty truck. The Godzilla swap is still relatively fresh although it is picking up some steam. At this time, there are still minimal K-member options for this engine, and along with the sheer size of the engine, you do have some constraints. Power steering and power brakes to name a couple. This is a heavy engine and will outweigh both the Coyote and Windsor engines. The full specs and products used in this project can be found in our Fox Body Godzilla Swap article as well as our current Godzilla parts offering here at LMR!
ENGINE | HORSEPOWER | TORQUE (lb/ft) |
| 393ci Windsor | 422 | 453.8 |
| Gen 2 Coyote 5.0L | 428 | 390.8 |
| 7.3L Godzilla | 471.8 | 477.6 |
