PLEASE NOTE: Because of the location of the headlight adjusters, tension springs, and the headlight bucket insulators we won't be addressing these at this time. Fortunately, the Mustang in our video has all of these components in working order and they are sandwiched between the front bumper and the header panel. The best way to remove these components is by removing both the front bumper and header panel but we will save that for another video. Now on to the headlight removal and install!


  1. Start off by removing the negative battery cable.

  2. Each headlight is held in place by (4) small retaining screws. There are (2) on the top and (2) on the bottom. These same retaining screws also secure the headlight trim rings. Loosen and remove the top (2) screws first, followed by the bottom screws (please be careful to not scratch the front bumper and we highly recommend a magnetic tip screwdriver).

  3. Carefully tilt the top of the light toward you and then remove both the headlight and trim ring at the same time from the headlight bucket.

  4. Disconnect the electrical connection and repeat these same steps for the other (3) lights.

  5. We also noticed during removal that someone had replaced these headlights and for whatever reason switched the high beam and low beam connections. For 1979-1986 Mustangs, the low beams had the connection with (3) terminals installed into the outside buckets and the high beams had the connection with (2) terminals in the inside buckets.

  6. So we took the time to reroute and maneuver the harness back to how it was supposed to be.

  7. Also, the previous owner had painted the headlight trim rings the same color as the grey trim which is also incorrect so we took an extra set off another vehicle that we had. If you run into the same issue with your car and don't have a replacement simply remove the paint and scuff the bezels with a fine gray scuff pad.

  8. After this issue is resolved take this time to clean the headlight buckets and surrounding area.

  9. With the area clean, connect all (4) headlights and loosely let them sit inside the buckets. Remember when connecting the lights, the low beams are on the outside and high beams on the inside.

  10. Reconnect the negative battery cable and test for low beam and high beam operation.

  11. When all of this is verified, disconnect the negative battery cable until you are finished.

  12. Now you can reinstall the headlight trim rings. Make note of the tighter screw hole grouping vs the larger grouping. Tighter is up top and larger is on the bottom.

  13. Position the trim ring into place and loosely install (4) new screws. Once all the screws have been started you can then fully tighten.

  14. Repeat these steps for the remaining trim rings.

  15. Now reconnect the negative battery cable, check over your work, and verify that the headlight aiming is correct. Check our other video and article explaining the steps needing to adjust your headlights if needed and you're all set!
