In this video, we’ll be taking a quick look at 5.0 Resto’s plastic retainer for the steering column trim which is applicable for 1983 to 1989 Mustangs. Like many other Fox Mustang interior parts, this is piece is oftentimes broken or missing. 5.0 Resto’s trim ring retainer is constructed from plastic and incorporates factory-style dimensions and tolerances.

Now because of the location of the retainer, removal of the steering wheel is required. We do have the steps on how to remove the steering wheel from a 1985 and 1986 Mustang and another removal on how to install the column trim ring for a 1987 to 1989 car. In that article, we also show the steps on how to remove the steering wheel. Lastly, if you own a 1983 or 1984 Mustang, simply pull the center rectangular cover towards you to remove it from the steering wheel frame. This will expose the retaining nut.


Installation/Removal


  1. So with the steering wheel removed, loosen and fully remove the left-hand Phillips head screw.

  3. Next, loosen, but do not fully remove the lower right-hand screw.

  5. This will allow enough room to slide the existing clip off of the metal bracket.

  7. Install the new clip onto the bracket in the same orientation.

  9. Reinstall and retighten the Phillips head screws.

  11. Position the trim ring over the tilt wheel lever and then verify all of the tabs line up.

  13. Now you can seat the trim ring into the clip.

  15. Reinstall the steering wheel and the retaining nut. Fully tighten the nut.

  17. Reinstall the cover or horn pad. After that, you’re good to go!

83-89 Mustang 5.0 Resto Column Trim Ring Retainer
Intro.
How’s it going, everyone? I’m Landan with LMR.com! In this video, we’ll be taking a
quick look at 5.0 Resto’s plastic retainer for the steering column trim which is applicable
for 1983 to 1989 Mustangs.

This small retaining clip installs onto the steering column assembly and its purpose is to
properly secure the tabs on the steering column trim ring.
Like many other Fox Mustang interior parts, this is piece is oftentimes broken or
missing.
5.0 Resto’s trim ring retainer is constructed from plastic and incorporates factory-style
dimensions and tolerances.
This will fit 1983 to 1989 Mustangs and in the box will be one trim ring retainer clip.
Now because of the location of the retainer, removal of the steering wheel is required.

Mustang and another video on how to install the column trim ring for a 1987 to 1989 car.

If you own a 1983 or 1984 Mustang, simply pull the center rectangular cover towards

Install.

Reinstall the cover or horn pad.
After that, you’re good to go!
