How’s it going everyone? Landan with LMR.com! In today’s video, I’ll be taking a quick look at 5.0 Resto’s steering column trim ring designed for the tilt wheel, 1987 to 1989 Fox Mustangs.
As most of us know by now, interior components in Fox Mustangs are always hit and miss in terms of their condition.
One of the several interior parts that fall victim to damage, prolonged sun exposure, and someone else’s inability to put the part back is the steering column trim ring for 1987 to 1989 Mustangs.
This is the piece that sits right behind the steering wheel and just in front the steering column covers.
This simple part covers unsightly intricate areas around the steering column such as the tilt wheel mechanism, lock cylinder, and wires.
5.0 Resto offers this factory-like reproduction trim ring that is molded from durable black plastic and incorporates an OE-style texture for a factory like fit and finish.
This trim ring is a direct replacement for 1987 to 1989 Mustangs equipped with the tilt steering wheel.
Install
To install this trim ring the right way, I would strongly recommend removing the steering wheel.
After all, removing the steering wheel in a 1987 to 1989 Fox takes all of 5 to 10 minutes to do.
You’ll first grab the back of the horn pad with your fingers and rotate towards you.
While holding the wheel with one hand, loosen and remove the 15mm retaining bolt with the other.
Assemble the steering wheel puller per the manufacturer’s instructions. Fox steering wheels utilize a 5-16”-24 thread for the puller bolts.
Slide these bolts through the puller frame and thread them into the wheel. Ensure that both of these bolts make several rotations until they become snug!
You want each bolt to be secure before turning the puller screw.
Place a screw pad or something equivalent in between the puller screw and steering shaft. Use the correct socket and wrench to turn the puller screw. You will more than likely have to hold the steering wheel with one hand while you turn the wrench with the other.
Once the steering wheel is pulled from the shaft, you can disassemble the puller tool.
Remove the old trim ring from the wheel.
Position the new one into place and verify that it snaps into place.
Apply blue thread locking compound to the retaining bolt. Position the wheel over the steering shaft and then install the bolt.
Tighten it down and torque to 23 to 33 lb-ft.
Reinstall the horn pad and then you’re good to go!
Now a little disclosure for you guys… Remember, this is molded plastic. When you take it out of the package you may need to wipe the trim ring with some isopropyl alcohol to remove any mold release agents.
It’s also a good idea to condition plastic interior parts with a high-quality water-based dressing to help protect the plastic from sun exposure.
For those of you that have an interior with some fading on adjacent panels, it may be in your best interest to grab some of our paint and get everything looking new again.
