In this article, LMR covers the quick breakdown of removing and replacing the Panhard Bar Brace for all 2005-2014 S197 Mustangs. From the factory, Ford equipped the S197 Mustang chassis with a flimsy, thin-gauged Panhard Bar Brace. Ultimately, this causes unwanted deflection and side-to-side movement in the rear end of the vehicle.

The addition of an aftermarket tubular or boxed brace will reinforce this critical mount on your chassis. As any of you know, having this kind of added rigidity will make your Mustang outperform the competition on and off of the track as it should. Today in the shop, we will be working on Jay's 2012 GT500. This car is nearing 200,000 miles, so it is due to inspect and upgrade the Panhard brace. Overall this one should take you roughly an hour to complete from start to finish.

Tools Needed

  • lift or a jack
  • set of jack stands
  • complete socket set
  • 3/8" or 1/2" impact
  • breaker bar
  • some assorted pry bars

S197 Mustang Panhard Brace Replacement Steps


  1. To begin the installation, place the car on a lift or jack stand and get it as high as possible.

  2. It is best to remove the Panhard bar to gain proper access to the brace. Check out these panhard bar replacement steps if needed.

  3. Once you have the Panhard bar out of the way, moving to the passenger side, remove the 18mm nut, then slide out the bolt.

  4. Remove both of the 15mm bolts on the driver’s side of the brace.

  5. Then you can remove the factory brace from the vehicle.

  6. Reverse your removal procedure with the new Panhard Bar Brace.

  7. Starting on the reassembly, put a small dab of blue thread lock on each one of the bolts.

  8. Reinstall the bolt and 18mm nuts on the passenger side.

  9. Follow up on the driver’s side with the (2) 15mm bolts.

  10. Tighten the 18mm nut to 90 lb/ft.

  11. Both of the 15mm bolts need to be tightened to 46 lb/ft.

  12. Reinstall your Panhard bar at this time and torque to specifications.

  13. Lower back down the car and check over the vehicle for any clearance issues, and you are all done!
