Mustang Spherical Upper Axle Bushing Kit.
Replace your worn out factory rubber upper axle bearings with this 1979-2004 Mustang J&M spherical upper axle bushing kit! Your factory rubber axle bushings deteriorate over time which leads to deflection, wheel hop, and traction loss. J&M designed this upper axle bushing kit to alleviate those problems! Featuring a billet aluminum construction, this bushing kit eliminates deflection and resists deterioration for long lasting performance! Utilizing a combination bronze and PTFE liner, these bushings carry a much higher load to standard PTFE liners, which results in a fluid upper control arm movement for increased traction! Unlike other bushing materials, J&M's spherical upper axle bushings will not bind during hard cornering! This kit is a direct replacement for your factory rubber bushings.
Fitment Note:
- Will NOT fit 1999-2004 Cobra IRS.
Application: 1979-2004 Mustang 7.5" and 8.8" Rear End

What’s up everybody? Landan with LMR.com! In this video, I’ll be talking about the benefits of adding a set of J&M rear upper axle bushings and the installation process for 1979 to 2004 Mustangs.
From the factory, Ford equipped the solid axle 7.5 and 8.8 rear ends with a rubber bushing. Overtime, rubber bushings become brittle and shrink which causes traction issues and increases unwanted bushing deflection.
This is J&M’s spherical upper axle bushings and they’re engineered for the solid axle 7.5 and 8.8 rear ends found in the 1979 to 2004 Mustangs.
Spherical bushings drastically reduce wheel hop and eliminates bushing deflection.
They’ll feature billet aluminum construction and a bronze PTFE bearing liner; they’re even heat treated and have a 4340 chrome moly bearing race for strength and durability.
J&Ms spherical bushings are great for road race applications, drag race applications, and even cars that are daily driven.
In the box will be two bushings, installation hardware and instructions.
Now we already put together a video on the removal process for factory rear upper axle bushings. Be sure and check that one out before you install the J&M spherical bushings.
For this install, we’ll be starting with the factory bushings already out of the axle housing. I even tossed the J&M bushings in the freezer before I started to help the installation.
Clean and debur the axle housing.
Ensure that the opening is free of any foreign material.
Remove the bushings from the freezer and apply some anti-seize to the bushing.
Align the bushing with the opening in the axle housing with the threaded side facing toward the pinion flange.
Use a block of wood and hammer, and lightly tap the bushing to seat it.
Assemble the bushing tool in a way that the large cup is on the side with the threaded end of the bushing.
Use a series of wrenches to press the bushing into the housing.
The flange on the bushing will sit flush and against the axle housing.
Once the bushing is completely seated, disassemble the tool and do the same for the other bushing.
Apply blue loc tite to the retaining nut and thread it on by hand.
Use a large wrench to tighten the nut or strike one of the flats with a small drift and hammer.
Approximate torque spec is 24 lb-ft.
Do the same for the other retaining nut.
Position the two bearing spacers into the bushing.
Slide one of the washers over the bolt and apply anti-seize to the shoulder.
Align the control arm with the bushing and install the bolt.
Install another washer and then thread on the nyloc nut.
Fully tighten the nyloc.
Do the same for the other side.
Double check your work, get the car on the ground and you’re all finished.
As far as installation goes here guys, this one is pretty straightforward to be honest with you. I would strongly recommend having this rear upper axle bushing tool in your arsenal. It’s going to make the removal and install process a heck of a lot easier! A few hours is all you should need to complete the install.
