From 1979-1993 the Fox Body Mustang offered a few different spindle options. Follow along, and we will cover everything you need to know about these!
Over the years, ordering brakes, bearings, and front struts have been a tad confusing due to the major differences between Fox Body Spindles. Within this article, we will cover these structural differences and measurements of these Fox spindles to clarify any 1979-1993 Mustang project you have!
These 1979-1986 5.0L or V8 and 1979-1993 2.3L four-cylinder applications used a spindle assembly that featured a 1.011" thick mounting surface between the spindle and the front strut. The distance between each of the strut mounting bolt holes (inner edge to inner edge) is 1.512". These applications (excluding 2.3L SVO) used a 10" front rotor for the brakes and a single 60mm piston on the front caliper.
These 1987-1993 5.0L or V8 applications used a spindle assembly that featured a .772" thick mounting surface between the spindle and the front strut. The distance between each of the strut mounting bolt holes (inner edge to inner edge) is 1.619".These applications used an 11" front rotor for the brakes and a single 60mm piston (73mm on the SVO) on the front caliper.
The inner wheel bearing used on all 1979-1986 5.0L & 1979-93 2.3L Spindles is a different sizing than the 1987-1993 5.0L applications.
1979-1986 5.0L & 1979-93 2.3L use a plastic dust shield for the front rotors, and the 1987-1993 5.0L features a metal option.
1987-1993 5.0L can cross over to the popular 1994-2004 SN spindles. The strut spacing on the spindle will be the same.
