What is PATS?
Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS), is Ford's immobilizer technology that being in 1996 vehicles. The keys have a radio-frequency transponder embedded in the plastic head, with a unique electronic identification code. When the vehicle is started, the computer sends a signal that is picked up by the transponder in the key. The transponder then returns a unique signal to the computer, confirming it can start and continue running. If the computer does not receive the correct code, the vehicle will remain disabled, often causing a flashing theft light and a no-start condition.
