Well alright guys, follow along as I walk you through the simple steps on installing an ACC quarter trim carpet kit into this 1990 convertible Fox Body.
To begin installation, start by removing the four Phillips head screws securing the rear interior quarter panel to the body of the car. Carefully free the upper seat belt trim cover from the interior quarter panel. Now, remove the two Phillips head screws next to the seat belt to allow removal of the belt. Slide the seat belt through the provision and disconnect the quarter window switch electrical connection if equipped. If not, remove the manual crank handle.
Do the same for the other side and then remove the interior quarter panels from the car. Lay one of the interior quarter panels on a clean work bench. Remove the staples from the old trim carpet. Peel back the carpet and then completely remove it from the rear interior quarter panel. Lightly scuff and clean the old glue off of the plastic with some green Scotch-Brite. Blow away any debris with an air nozzle and then thoroughly clean the plastic with rubbing alcohol. Spray a light, thin coat of upholstery adhesive to the rear quarter panel. Clean off any over spray from the plastic that will not be covered by the carpet.
Ensure you follow the directions closely on the adhesive. The 3M Hi-Strength 90 adhesive we used called for a 2-5 minute cure time or until the adhesive was tacky before applying any material. Carefully line up the new carpet and then firmly apply pressure to the entire area. Be sure and clean the back side of the rear interior quarter panel as well. Flip the quarter panel upside down and make recess cuts into the material. Spray a small amount of adhesive and allow to set.
Roll the material over the plastic and firmly apply pressure for a few seconds.
Repeat these steps for the entire length of the material. Work slowly and don’t rush the cure time of the adhesive. Cut the end to a point and then roll it over the back side of the panel. Use a staple gun and staple the remaining material to the back of the quarter panel. Poke a hole for the screw and then repeat these steps for the other side. Allow the adhesive to fully cure and then re-install the rear interior quarter panels. Double check everything, and you’re all finished.
As far as installation goes guys, this one is extremely straight-forward. Really the only thing that makes this install lengthy is the wait time for the spray adhesive. Other than that, you should be able to knock this one out in your garage in about three hours.
