As the Fox Body Mustang entered its 15th and final year of production, there was much electricity in the air with new information about the new SN-95 Mustang which was officially released on October 15th, 1993! Even with Fox Body getting near the end of its cycle, the biggest highlight of 1993 Fox Body was the return of the Cobra and the introduction of the '93 Cobra R!

The goal of SVT was to produce a Mustang that performed better than the current Mustang GT. The standout with the current GT was that it was extremely proficient in acceleration and a stiff suspension to ensure that all of the power went to the ground. The 1993 Cobra and Cobra-R combated this by putting out 235hp with 280 ft-lbs of torque! While there were several components that lead to this significant power increase, the most notable was the GT-40 cylinder heads. These heads featured slightly larger intake and exhaust ports as well as larger intake and exhaust valves. To add to these cylinder heads, a new upper and lower intake manifold was used that featured larger diameter runners and also used a larger 65mm throttle body and a 70mm mass air meter. The stock fuel injectors at 19 lb./hr were upgraded to 24 lb./hr.

The 1993 Cobra-R first came about when a call was made when the SVE Engineering Supervisor (Steve Anderson), received a call from SVO (Ford Racing) regarding if it was possible to build a lighter 1993 SVT Cobra. It was decided that the biggest areas of needed improvement were the brakes, suspension, and cooling system. No additional power was added due to it being too expensive and impractical for such a limited run of models. Once the green light was given for production, the official dealer announcement was made on April 7, 1993, which is now known as the "R" Competition Package in which only 107 models were made!
